Mayo LGFA turned 51 years in 2026. 51 is a magic number for Gaelic Football in this county, and 2026 is another. To mark it, we are inviting 51 people to stand with the women and girls who play football in this county, as the founding collective of what comes next.

Sinéad Walsh · MacHale Rovers Playing football at the foot of Nephin since she was six. Top scorer, Division 1 National League, 2025. Next month she swaps her boots for an evening gown at the All Stars. Sinéad is studying to become a teacher in Limerick. Three times every week, she makes the 320-kilometre round trip between college and home. 960 kilometres a week, before she ever sets foot on a pitch. She does it for Mayo.

The Story

We stand on the
shoulders of giants.

Fifty years ago, Teresa Higgins captained Mayo to All-Ireland glory. In 1976, Teresa led Mayo's U16s to a victory that remains the county's only All-Ireland U16 A title. That same year, she also lined out with the senior team that defeated Galway to win Mayo's first Connacht Senior Championship.

Breege Murphy played alongside Teresa in both of those historic victories. An impenetrable full back, Breege didn't own her own football boots. She relied on borrowing her brother's. A couple of sizes too big, she taped them on before every game.

The women who followed them would bring the Brendan Martin Cup home to Mayo four times. Generations of girls would find friendship, confidence, and a place for themselves in the game. And now, fifty years on, Teresa's niece Laura leads Claremorris into a new chapter for her club in their first season in the Senior Club Championship.

We owe those women a future worthy of what they began. We owe today's players the coaching, facilities, resources and support to discover just how good they can be. And we owe the little girls on sidelines across Mayo the chance to look at the women representing their clubs and county and think: That could be me.
